Because Mac OS X applications are usually single files, which you only need to extract, uninstalling them involves nothing more than just clicking and dragging the files to the trash bin. However, certain applications are installed through a wizard, because they come with other components which need to be installed on the Mac. This means that you would need to locate all other files that belong to an application, besides its .app file. AppCleaner can relieve you from this risky task. It can find an application's components for you, so you can remove them safely, without the risk of deleting critical files and damaging the operating system.

AppCleaner's functionality is very straightforward. All you have to do is drag and drop one or more apps over a compact user interface. This will instantly display all the files that belong to those apps, if there are any on your Mac. You can target individual files, by clicking their corresponding check boxes, after which you only need to click a button to delete them.

Besides clicking and dragging apps, you can also display all installed applications, on the same interface, with only one click. In addition, AppCleaner can display widgets and plug-ins in a similar manner. Once you select one or more apps or other components, you may click a Search button, to start looking for their files.

AppCleaner comes with two other useful features, which you can find in its general settings menu. First, you can drag and drop apps to a list to protect them from accidental removal. The second feature, which you will definitely appreciate is AppCleaner's Smart Delete feature. If activated, the utility will react automatically when you trash files the old fashioned way, by offering to search for that app's related files.
